What is a shortfill e-liquid?

A shortfill is a bottle of 0mg nicotine e-liquid that is deliberately underfilled to leave room for adding nicotine shots. A standard 100ml shortfill comes in a 120ml bottle, with 100ml of e-liquid and 20ml of space. That space is designed to take two 10ml nicotine shots, which brings the total volume to 120ml and dilutes the nicotine concentration to approximately 3mg across the full bottle. If you add one shot instead of two, the nicotine works out at around 1.5mg at a slightly reduced volume.

Shortfills exist because UK TPD regulations prohibit selling nicotine-containing e-liquid in bottles larger than 10ml. The shortfill format complies with this rule by selling the flavoured base at 0mg, with nicotine shots sold as separate 10ml products. This allows vapers who use sub-ohm tanks and high-VG e-liquid to buy their flavoured base in larger, more economical volumes rather than buying 10ml bottles at much higher cost per ml.

The 0mg option is also chosen by vapers who want the flavour and vapour production of a high-VG blend without any nicotine, either because they have already reduced their nicotine intake to zero or because they are dual-using alongside another nicotine source. At VapeCity, all shortfills are available at 0mg as-stocked, and nic shots are available separately to add your own strength.

VG/PG ratio and which device to use

Most shortfills at VapeCity are 70/30 VG/PG or higher. High-VG blends (70% vegetable glycerine or above) produce a thick, dense vapour with a smoother throat hit and intense flavour at high wattage. They are designed for sub-ohm tanks and direct-to-lung devices running at 40-80W with coils below 0.5 ohm. The high VG content requires wide wicking ports in the coil to flow properly; the tight coil geometry of a pod kit or MTL tank does not wick thick VG liquid well, leading to dry hits and premature coil burnout.

The Zeus Juice 50/50 range (£45.99) and Original Vape 100 at 60/40 (£16.99) are the exceptions at VapeCity, using a more balanced PG ratio that works in both sub-ohm and MTL devices. If you use a pod kit or MTL tank and want a larger bottle format rather than 10ml nic salts, a 50/50 shortfill with a nic shot added is the correct approach. For all other shortfills in the 70/30 range, a sub-ohm tank is required.

At the sub-ohm end, the Geekvape Zeus Sub-Ohm Tank, Vaporesso iTank T and Smok TFV Mini V2 are the tanks stocked at VapeCity that are suited to 70/30 shortfills. Pair a 70/30 shortfill at 3mg with a sub-ohm tank coil at 0.2-0.4 ohm at 40-70W for the intended flavour and vapour output. Running a 70/30 shortfill through a 1.0 ohm MTL coil at 12W will result in poor wicking and muted flavour.
